Bonding on a Summer Night
Harry likes the freedom of the road, and the freedom to play his games miles away from Linda and arguments about D-I-Y. He likes overnighting in the foreign lorry parks, better equipped than ones at home. Tonight, he can’t choose between John Travolta and James Bond, but the redhead sitting at the bar can’t resist him. Anticipating the night ahead, he takes the drink she offers and leans in.
The truck, a bit heavier than expected, takes the early Channel crossing. In the Centre Hospitalier de Calais, the gendarme repeats his questions, Harry stares at him, his mind totally blank.

Illegals? Or am I just over-preoccupied with the latest scenes in Calais? Nice one Dee, and a different take on the prompt. I thought I’d just responded to a different story from you but I can’t find it now.

Yes and I’m preoccupied with the scenes too. So worrying, friends in Kent are really distraught about what’s happening as the illegals not caught just seem to disappear into the countryside! Hope all

Whether or not I was meant to, I too thought ‘illegals’. Living just along the coast from Dover it’s a really big topic around these parts.

Hi Rosey – yes the story was about ‘illegals’ stealing the truck to get to UK, I almost had them killing the driver but then decided against it. They are causing a huge problem along the coast, friends in Kent are really worried. Thanks for reading 😊

Well he lived to regret it at least … Lots of problems at the French ferry ports with illegal immigrants trying to get to UK , stowing away on trucks and making a run for it once they’re here … Thanks for reading

It’s a very bad problem and the French have had lots of trouble at the ports with illegal immigrants trying to board trucks heading to the UK. The news is quite bad, as up to 350 stowaways were removed from vehicles in four hours in Calais yesterday.
Evidently our government are deploying more border staff and ‘sniffer’ dogs to France in an attempt help.

A very topical story and very well written. I heard a piece on the radio from a haulier saying if somebody gets into his lorry that is carrying perishable goods they have to ditch all that food because of the risk of contamination. So many companies are losing so much money and the price of fresh vegetables in the UK is going up as we supply is low because of this.

A very difficult situation for everyone and no-one has a solution. The hauliers haven’t got a chance against the huge numbers of immigrants swarming over their vehicles and yes you are quite right, loads are being dumped every day.

A friend’s daughter is just back from a school trip to France. On opening the boot of the coach back at school in Hertfordshire they found 4 men – severely dehydrated. Had stowed away a few days before Calais in fact. One did run away.
Very up to the minute story. Well done!

Thanks Miranda, that must have been an terrible shock for the driver or whoever opened the boot of the coach. I saw photos of men balancing on the bonnet of a car on the motorway yesterday, edging closer and closer to the rear of a truck, so close that the driver can’t see them, and then trying to open the rear doors to get in!!! Utter madness.

The root of the story is the problem facing truck drivers at Calais etc due to migrant problems and hi-jacking of trucks & their loads. It’s getting worse and not much seems to be done to protect drivers. Thanks for reading Dawn
