Inspired by the Daily Prompt – Outside

The Dancing Horse

Friday Fictioneers are riding high! Lots of writers from all over the world race to join our group each week. Marshalled by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields, we trot, canter and gallop along to the finish line with our interpretation of the prompt for each week.
The photo this week is courtesy of Doug McIlroy, a great fictioneer.

The Dancing Horse

In the high pasture hidden away, the old grey horse raises his head. Ears pricked, he hears the music drifting up from the valley below. Memories stir, the crowds and applause come back to him.

He sways in time with the music, then very slowly lifts his front legs off the ground, the muscles in his hind quarters rippling and straining with the effort to keep them in the air. He attempts a Levade, learned in a different life, long ago.

In the stables in Vienna, the name Maestoso Portia shines bright above his stall and fresh straw is waiting.

I saw the famous Lipizzaner horses at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna performing their Airs Above the Ground  a few years ago, it was a magical experience. Then later, I heard stories about how some of these magnificent horses had been stolen and just disappeared,  I wondered what happened to them. Weekly Photo Challenge – Forward

Some photos that say “Forward” to me.

The path to the beach was so inviting, I just had to walk over it. The road out of Jasper was amazing, we drove for miles and didn’t see another car.  We saw a bear and a few elks but nothing else for mile after mile; the scenery was just awesome we rode in silence for most of the journey. Our holiday to the southern region of Sardinia was very enjoyable, we explored ancient ruins which overlooked the sea, and visited the island of Sant’Antioco, where we found the deserted street.

Travel Theme – Bridges

Ailsa has chosen ‘Bridges’ as her travel theme this week. Here are some of the bridges I’ve either crossed, travelled on or under or just stared at. You can see more posts on Bridges if you visit wheresmybackpack

Travel Theme – Multiples

These are my photos for Ailsa’s Travel  Theme this week. They are all “Multiples” of one kind or another

Multiples

I found the stones outside the lower reception area of the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, they had a lot of very interesting objects set in and around the hotel.
The scallops were part of the very enjoyable lunch we had at the Portxiol Hotel in Majorca. The hotel is set in a stunning location by the harbour, just outside Palma.
The shoes – well, a friend had been telling me of her search for flat black pumps and how she had been unable to find any that she liked. While we were in Cornwall, I saw this display in the front of a shop window.
The narrow street is in Mevagissey a lovely old fishing village, also in Cornwall. The lines of windows caught my eye as the street wound away up the hill.

Hope you like them. You can see other “Multiples” here http://wheresmybackpack.com/2013/01/04/travel-theme-multiples/

I have been thinking too at this sad time, how delicate the balance is between life and death.

I pray that the families who lost loved ones in the heartbreaking, senseless massacre at the school in Newtown can find some peace, can take some small solace from the knowledge that so many thousands of people are sending them their sympathy and heartfelt condolences.

Peaceful – Sunday Post

My post is a bit late this week, but here are a few peaceful places and you can see more of the Sunday Post here at Jake’s blog

The first photo was taken in Butchart Gardens, just outside Victoria BC,  the other two are in the grounds of the hotel we stayed at in “peaceful Las Vegas” – strange but true.  I hope you like them 🙂

Vacation in Las Vegas & electing a President

20121106-163002.jpg

This is the view from the window of our hotel in Las Vegas. We were here last 25 years ago, my husband had heard so much about the changes that had taken place during that time that he has spent ages planning a return trip.

Well, the city has certainly changed and grown since we saw it last, but apart from the dazzling lights and razzmatazz of The Strip there’s a lot of buzz here about the forthcoming election.

The buzz we have got has mostly been from taxi drivers who are very keen to tell us how they feel.

One summed up what most of them had told us, “the politicians all shaft the working man, so best vote for the one who will shaft us the least.” (He said his vote was for Obama).

I laughed with him at what he told us, but reflected that I could have been talking with a taxi driver back home, or anywhere else in the world for that matter. The sentiment would have been the same.

I will watch the results with interest and be thinking of Joe the taxi driver, he will be working but listening to his radio.
